Report: Weston McKennie set to miss one month with shoulder injury

Weston McKennie has yet to feature in preseason action for Serie A side Juventus and it now looks like that reportedly carry over to the start of the competition play.

McKennie missed Saturday’s 2-0 friendly loss to Real Madrid with a shoulder injury and is set to miss at least one month, TuttoMercato reported Sunday. The U.S. men’s national team midfielder was on the bench for summer friendlies against Chivas de Guadalajara and Barcelona in recent weeks, but did not dress in Saturday’s trip to the Rose Bowl.

Juventus has one final friendly against Atletico Madrid on August 7 before opening its Serie A schedule vs. Sassuolo on Aug. 15.

McKennie has totaled 75 combined appearances for the Old Lady, scoring 10 goals and registering three assists since his arrival in 2020. Injuries hampered McKennie’s 2021-22 season, reducing the American midfielder to only 29 appearances in all competitions.

The 23-year-old scored four goals for the Serie A giants, a career-best to date. He was previously linked with a move away from Turin this summer, but has been supported by manager Massimiliano Allegri to play a key role this season.

“As for McKennie, he is a Juventus player that is very important,” Allegri said earlier this month during preseason camp. “Unfortunately, last year he missed games due to an injury he suffered in the Champions League but he will travel with us to the U.S. tour. McKennie will have the opportunity to play a great season at Juventus this year.”

McKennie’s recent injury could hurt his chances for USMNT involvement in September, as Gregg Berhalter’s squad will face Japan and Saudi Arabia in Europe on Sept. 23 and 27 respectively. These will be the final pre-World Cup friendlies for the USMNT before opening group stage play in November against Wales.
