Could another ‘puppet mayor’ have been elected to run the City of Johannesburg?
RESIDENT IN FOR A SURPRISE AS NEW MAYOR IS ELECTED
Residents are yet to find out as AL JAMA-AH mayoral candidate Kabelo Gwamanda had a clean sweep to clinch the position from rivals Funzi Ngobeni of ActionSA and Mpho Phalatse of the Democratic Alliance (DA).
Things did not go according to plan for ActionSA after their candidate secured minimum votes.
“We want to thank the IFP, ACDP, VF+, UIM and three DA Councillors in the City of Johannesburg who stood together to keep the ANC-EFF out of the City of Johannesburg by voting for Funzi Ngobeni as Mayor,” the party said.
“Unfortunately, Johannesburg has again fallen to an ANC/EFF proxy mayor.”
WHAT ACTIONSA WANTS DONE BY NEWLY ELECTED JOBURG MAYOR
“We urge new Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda to prioritise service delivery to the more than five million residents of the City of Johannesburg who are desperate amidst bouts of load shedding and water shedding while roads are deteriorating,” the party further said.
Should Gwamanda not deliver, ActionSA who dubbed the former City of Joburg mayor Thapelo Amad, a puppet used by the ANC-EFF coalition, might find himself facing a motion of no confidence.
Gwamanda’s predecessor resigned from the position last month following pressure from ActionSA and other political parties. The parties felt Amad was incoherent and incompetent to lead the City of Johannesburg. As a result, his resignation was announced by ANC Gauteng leader Panyaza Lesufi a day before he faced a motion of no confidence.
DA BLAMES PA FOR VOTING IN ANOTHER ANC SO-CALLED ‘PUPPET’
Meanwhile, the DA has blamed the Patriotic Alliance (PA) for failing their plan to govern the metro.
“Once more, the PA betrays the people of SA by siding with the ANC-EFF. This parasitic pattern is now spreading across SA, with the PA propping up the #DoomsdayCoalition in an increasing number of municipalities,” the party commented.
